Today, we are going to talk about auto safety including how to bring back a dead car battery, what you should keep in your car at all times for a dead car battery and we'll also introduce to you an incredible automotive accessory that easily fits in the back of your vehicle that adds instant traction anytime you need it.
Dead car battery fix: Why your battery dies...
Car batteries die for many reasons. Sometimes it's from human error and other times it's out of our control. These include:
- Leaving the vehicle's exterior lights on
- Leaving the vehicle's interior lights on
- Leaving the vehicle's radio on
- A generally weak battery
- Corroded or loose battery connections
- Extremely hot and cold temperature swings
- Vehicles charging system (alternator) problems
While it's good to know generally why batteries fail and die. Knowing what to do after a battery dies is key to getting you back on the road.
Dead car battery fix: What to do when your car battery dies...
There are several things you can do once your car battery dies. These include:
- Charging or replacing the battery
- Having the battery and the charging system in your car checked to see which one could be causing the problem.
Let's talk about each of these next.
Dead car battery fix: Charging your car battery...
There several ways that you can charge your car battery once it dies. We recommend that you have car jumper cables and also a portable car battery charger in your car at all times. These can be a real lifesaver in case your car battery dies especially if it happens in a remote area.
When using jumper cables, you need another car battery to help "jump" your car battery. This is done in a particular sequence to make sure you are safe as well as to not damage the batteries. Here are the steps:
- Make sure both cars are parked and turned off.
- Connect the red clip on the POSITIVE terminal or + on YOUR car battery.
- Connect the other red clip on the POSITIVE terminal or + on the OTHER car battery.
- Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the OTHER battery.
- Attach the last black clip to an unpainted metal surface on YOUR car that isn’t near the battery.
- Start the OTHER car and let it run for at least 2 to 5 minutes.
- Then start YOUR car.
- Remove the jumper cables in the same order in reverse.
- Drive YOUR car for at least 15 minutes before turning off.
Another way to charge your battery is by using a portable car battery charger. Portable car battery charges can be a lifesaver if you ever have battery problems in a remote area where other drivers may not be around to give you a battery jump.
They are basically a high-powered battery themselves and many are lightweight and have extra capabilities such as a built-in flashlight and USB charging ports. They will need to be monitored though to make sure they are charged when needed (otherwise you'll have 2 dead batteries on your hands).
While they can get a little pricey (they typically range from $20 to $100), they can save a lot of time and headaches and are well worth the price. Please follow the instructions that come with the portable car battery charger when using.

Dead car battery fix: Check the battery and car charging system...
Directly after charging your car battery, if possible, we suggest driving your car to an auto parts store or repair shop to have the battery and charging system checked if it's not known what caused the battery to die in the first place like interior or exterior lights or the car radio being left on accidentally. In case it turns out that you need a new battery or possibly an alternator, this puts you in a good spot to have the issue corrected then and not get stuck with a dead battery again after charging it in the first place.
